NEW YORK: Qatar’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister H H Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor Al Thani stressed the urgency of establishing a new world order leading to an equitable distribution of wealth, nationally and internationally.
Addressing the annual coordinating meeting of foreign ministers of the G77 and China, held in conjunction with the 58th Session of the UN General Assembly on Thursday, the Minister thanked the group for choosing Qatar to lead the group in 2004.
Qatar, he said, would present the strategy and method of work it intends to follow and the initiatives it plans to launch next January.
Speaking on a wide range of issues, including poverty, information technology, external trade and direct foreign investments, and environmental problems, the Minister said that poverty can only be eliminated through genuine economic development.
Research and experience have proven that it is impossible to achieve a sustainable increase in the income of the poor without achieving macro-economic gro-wth. Development must be sustainable, effective, equitable and humanitarian, he said.
