According to Politico’s chief columnist Roger Simon, even if Ron Paul wins the crucial Iowa primary, the result will simply be ignored and the establishment media will instead concentrate on the order in which Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney finish.
Simon tries to downplay the significance of Iowa by pointing out that “exotic” candidates have won in the past, yet fails to mention how two of the last three successful Republican nominees started the campaign trial with a win in Iowa.
He then denigrates the importance of August’s Ames straw poll, which is normally seen as a key barometer, simply because Paul almost won it.
“The media’s not going to be blown away” by a Paul win, states Simon. In other words, if Paul wins, the media will simply continue to ignore his existence in a desperate effort to prevent him from building the kind of momentum that would increase his chances of performing well in New Hampshire, Florida and subsequent primaries. The allegation is clear, Newt Gingrich’s latest assertion that Ron Paul’s “volunteer base is people who want to legalize drugs” is designed to create the impression that anyone who votes for Paul is at best socially irresponsible or at worst a crack addled junkie.
The former speaker of the House made the remarks in an interview with conservative commentator John McCaslin yesterday, also taking a swipe at Paul over his foreign policy outlook.
“This is a guy who basically says, if the United States were only nice, it wouldn’t have had 9/11.” Gingrich stated, boiling down an extremely complex issue into a meaningless snipe.
“He doesn’t want to blame the bad guys. … He dismisses the danger of Iranian nuclear weapon and seems to be indifferent to the idea that Israel could be wiped out.” Gingrich added.
Anyone who has spent more than five minutes researching Ron Paul’s stance on foreign policy, and 9/11 in particular, knows that Paul subscribes to the ‘blowback’ theory put forth by multiple experts, former US intelligence officials and validated by Osama Bin Laden himself, that the US is viewed as a legitimate target because it has engaged in military occupation and preemptive war in the middle east and beyond for decades. A shooting at the University of Texas campus that was initially blamed on a lone nut took on a political aspect after it emerged that the incident coincided with a speech by second amendment expert John Lott about the right to concealed carry that was due to take place tonight but has since been cancelled.
The Associated Press is now reporting that police are investigating two separate crime scenes after a gunman opened fire inside a library then fatally shot himself early this morning. Authorities are still searching for a second suspect and the University is on lock down with all classes having been cancelled. Continue reading
